The Town of Wilkie
Today, Wilkie boasts fully serviced campgrounds at the Regional Park, an outdoor swimming pool, a complex containing a hockey arena, curling arena and a dance hall, a nine hole golf course, motel and hotel accommodations and the largest grasshopper in the world. Of special interest is the Wilkie museum, a complex of buildings commemorating the community's heritage. Tours start at the 1909 fire hall and continue to buildings that house an impressive collection of newspaper and magazines spanning over nine decades, railroad equipment, a school house, a blacksmith shop, a caboose, a general store, a prairie home and the Wilkie Press Building which contains old presses and typesetters. Recorded history reveals that the first fur trading post was established here in 1785, a telegraph line in 1874, a North West Mounted Police headquarter in 1876, the Capital of the North West Territories in 1877, and the first newspaper west of Winnipeg in 1878. In 1905, North Battleford came into being when the CNR built a railroad on the north side of the North Saskatchewan River. It was the fastest growing centre in the West, was incorporated as a village in 1906, became a town in 1907, and a city in 1913. The Battlefords are the crossroads for the Yellowhead Highway Route with four other highways, No. 4, 26, 29 and 40.
